"Always put yourself before others." The young boy wished he could believe in such a proverb. What a wonderful life would it be to be able to love yourself, right? Battling yourself down just because of your terrible life situations is normal, but until you realize you're doing it on purpose. "Am I faking it?", the boy thought. The ability to rekindle that love for yourself is something not easy to achieve.

He sat in front of a pitiful fire, about to go out. "We didn't get enough resources for the fire." He thought to himself as the fire in the furnace went out. How was he going to cook food for the family now? Not to mention, 'he's' always got his eye on me. Earlier his father yelled out to the boy "Where's my damn food?!" He turned towards the living room where his father sat, in front of that same old static TV. Probably, by now he has fallen asleep. The young boy gulped and stood up, his heart racing as he stepped out of the kitchen into the living room. His dirty feet moved through empty bottles and cigarette butts strewn across the floor. He felt no different from the trash around his home. They never had an unstained and spotless home anyways. "I was born into this place called home," he reminded himself. "Be appreciative as long as you have a roof over your head."

Out of nowhere, the floorboard creaked, his father almost woke up. Despite being instilled with fear, he pressed forward and pulled out a small blunt stone that was a makeshift knife. Holding it out towards the throat of the man before him with both hands, shaking. Now was his chance to end the source of all his troubles. Suddenly, the sounds of his young baby sister began crying, causing his plan to foil as his father had awoken. Quickly, the boy went off to tend to his little sister in the other room. Upon entering, he looked at the terrible condition of the room. Same like their entire home. "I'm sorry I can't give you a healthy environment...You must be hungry." his thumb rubbed against the cheek of the baby. The only love and care he had for his family was none other than his little sister. She was precious and beautiful. Another symbol of what mother had left before her death. To be fair, her death is what shattered this entire ménage. Other than his little sister, his older brother was too much of a prick like his father. Always acting tough. When bullying and personal attacks replace genuine conversation and principled disagreement, everyone suffers. "Oh so I wanted to believe. I just want to protect myself and lil' sis." The worst of all was his father. He remembers the gruesome nights. What can such a heinous man do to his son? All those flashing images of being maltreated and molested was just another reason why this world of his is pushing him to the edge. "I am not safe in this household. I want to cry. I want to run."

Sometimes, nobody can exactly escape horrific events that happen in the place you live in, especially when the situation can't be helped. You can't leave that place. You're too young. You can't handle yourself out there. Nobody can help you. Nobody understands you. "Was the advice of confronting or that easy solution of calling for help really that accessible?" By then, if life really was that easy to overcome any situation with the obvious solutions, it's all happy dandy. He only found advice on life from awareness posters around the city during his errands for groceries and resources. He always had to do everything. "I grew up too soon. Is this considered pre-maturing?" he wondered. “Shouldn't it be an adult? I grew up too soon" The young boy questioned himself.

"Hey kid, why are you alone?"

“Where are your parents?"

"Disgusting rat. Stay away from me."

"Ah. That's right. That's humanity," he mused. Returning home, he’d be greeted by his father with no good surprises. He lived through it. Time to time he'd shield his little sister from his older brother's kicks and rage. “I can handle it,” he told himself, enduring a kick to the back. “I’m alive and well,” he muttered, receiving a slap to the face. “I’m fine,” he gasped while choking. He tried not to scream while feeling the pain across his body whilst being assaulted.

As his life goes by, he ponders as he’s laying on the floor on some scrapped cardboards, breathing slowly. “I don’t want to die.” he said to himself as his eyes were tearing up. “I want to live happily…” more tears built up. “Why can’t my life be any easier?” his throat was tightening. He covered his face as tears streamed down his eyes. As the darkness around him consumed him, leaving no room for light, suddenly a glowing leaf flew by. Catching his eyes. Was it hope? “No, I don’t want to believe it.” He refused to open his eyes. Suddenly more glowing lights appeared in that void of darkness he’s trapped in. As he sat up and opened his eyes, they twinkled. Before him was a glowing white figure. He couldn’t speak, he didn’t know what to do nor say. He stayed still. “You are safe now. What is your name?” the figure before him spoke. It sounded like a soft voice, an angelic one. The young boy stuttered and tried to speak, but how can he answer? “Do not fret. All children deserve to be saved.” a hand reached out to him, gesturing for him to take it. “Did help really just come right at my moment of sulking?” the boy thought to himself. But finally, help was right in front of him. He could reach out. Take it and- Suddenly, right before he was about to take the figure’s hand, he withdrew.

“Where is my little sister? Who are you?”

“Who I am doesn’t matter, no worries.” the figure spoke. “Take your time”

The young boy stared at the figure before remembering how weak and tired he was. He saw a few Midnight Rangers’ rush in to help him. “Did my, did my signs for help…finally work?” He had been trying to signal his distress for months. Alas, finally his efforts had paid off. Despite not having any hope in it to begin with. Whether it was his efforts or something else that caught the authorities attention to save him, he seemed…grateful. “Finally. It’s over. Right?” He was finally able to pass out in the arms of a guard.

From then on, the young boy’s life has changed. Drastically. What had happened to his family still remains a mystery. Usually, when someone who has been the source of your pain throughout your entire life, the word ‘hate’ is most suited to describe your way of viewing them, right? Qinjuan never hated his father, nor his brother. In fact, till this day he still holds them deep in his heart. Or so he wants to believe. In hopes that they’re alive and well out there. As for his little sister, sadly she has been given away into a different family. Never to be reunited with again. “As long as she is okay, that’s all that matters to me right now. I wouldn’t want her to be around me. It’s almost as if it's…unsafe for her to do so.”

Despite his outward claims of love for his father and older brother, Qinjuan often found himself consumed by conflicting emotions. He remembered the days when his mother was alive, when their family felt whole and happy. Back then, even his father and older brother seemed better, more humane. But the peace was always fragile; his father would still take out his frustrations on his mother, and his brother, shaped by their father's harshness, began to mimic the same cruelty. Qinjuan clung to these bittersweet memories, trying to justify his lingering affection. Deep down, he knew he wanted to believe in the facade of familial love, to mask the hatred that festered within him. It was a lie he told himself, a desperate attempt to hold onto a semblance of normalcy in his shattered world. In quiet moments, he wrestled with this inner turmoil, questioning if he truly loved them or if it was just a hollow hope to find peace in his heart.

Qinjuan was raised by one of the military officers who saved him. His new life was unremarkable yet secure. It wasn’t really anything special from that time. All that happened is just described as normal. In his own words. Being able to eat, sleep. Have a roof under his head. Having other family members love and adore you was just perks to this family packaging. He was still good at heart and had contributed to the family in his own ways to show his appreciation. After all, they did change his life for the better. Finally, he could get an education and live safely and healthily. He never wasted the opportunities given to him. Though there were some setbacks.. He always wanted to make sure he never wastes the efforts of others that shaped him.

Excelling his studies made him admirable. It was an easy ticket to access or continue whatever he wanted in life after finishing. Though, his adoptive parents had other plans for him. With their field in the Midnight Rangers, they easily put the boy in that area. It never really was his choice, but like said. He didn’t want to opt out as to disappoint or rebel against the people that raised him. “It’s the worst thing for parents to hear that. They’d think they fed you, spent money on you and wasted everything only for you to pursue something else. Quite hilarious.” says Qinjuan. With his hard-working and intelligent skills, he climbed up the ranks. It took him more endless challenges to face. Struggle, pain, tiring and restlessness. Eventually one day, he reached so high. People began to say, “You might become one of the executives!” he was told by many. “I mean I was told other things but… it’s too much!” Though modest, Qinjuan always says.

In the course of time, Qinjuan's journey in the Midnight Rangers takes a pivotal turn when he is unexpectedly promoted to Brigadier General following the death of a higher-up. This promotion, due to a secret recommendation from his former commander, Versago, thrusts him into a role he's not fully prepared for, surrounded by more experienced and older peers. Despite feeling out of place and struggling to match their superiority, he strives to adapt and prove himself.

Versago, now the Chief of Staff and right hand to General Jiyan, becomes a crucial mentor and guide for Qinjuan, offering support and advice. However, Qinjuan faces relentless mockery from Colonels Oberon and Chilo, who taunt him for his appearance and perceived weaknesses. They resent his sudden rise in rank and often create tension during meetings, accusing him of not contributing effectively due to his youthful perspective. Only because the rest besides him are usually older and experienced. Versago stands up for Qinjuan, asserting the need for bright minds like his, which temporarily silences the two but leaves them simmering with discontent. “Tch, this damn fox boy. Always getting in the way”, Colonel Lieutenant Chilo would say. “Eh, I don’t know. I just don’t think he’s good enough to be in such a position.” Colonel Oberon claims.

As time passes, the responsibilities of Qinjuan's role weigh heavily on him. An impending threat from the Tacet Discords grows more severe, and one morning, Qinjuan finds Versago alone in a dark hall, nursing a bruise. Qinjuan, usually being an early bird before others, was something he did a lot. As Qinjuan tries to talk to his superior, Versago brushes off Qinjuan's concerns, hinting at personal conflicts but refusing to elaborate. The young boy is usually always the one ranting and complaining to Versago, so he felt bad that Versago won’t do the same and open up to him. Despite their usual exchanges of cash and cigarettes, Versago declines Qinjuan's offer, maintaining his tough exterior.

The threat escalates, prompting General Jiyan to call a critical meeting. This caused intense conflict within the commanders due to the delayed notice for the approaching danger. “”General, with all due respect. You should’ve let us know sooner about the issue. Now look what is coming!” During the tense discussions, Oberon and Chilo's disrespectful complaints push Qinjuan to leave abruptly. Due to Oberon and Chilo’s behavior, they’re told to leave the room. Feeling angry at Qinjuan for this, they tail and lead him to a secluded area under false pretenses, only to taunt him further. This ‘incident’ adds to Qinjuan's growing sense of inadequacy, though he keeps it to himself until Versago learns of it. Despite his anger, Versago is unable to take action, respecting Qinjuan's request to let it go. Versago understood Qinjuan’s past that is affecting him to feel helpless. “Hey kid, I know now isn’t the right time and I respect your decisions but… you can’t keep letting people take advantage of you.” Versago would advise, which would become a constant reminder for Qinjuan.

A major TD outbreak necessitates an all hands on deck response from the Midnight Rangers, leading to a major battle. The high-ranking officers, including Versago and Qinjuan, are divided into squads. As the battle intensifies, it slowly becomes extremely bad when some begin to falter and get gravely injured for the soldiers involved. Realizing the severity of the situation, Versago orders his squad to retreat and assist others, choosing to face a massive wave of Discords alone.

“He’s always been seen as a beggar, maybe a chainsmoker and an alcoholic guy. But, he’s a loving father and a parental figure to me… If I had known how much he cares for those he nurtures… maybe he wouldn’t have made such a decision that day.”

Qinjuan learns of Versago's lone fight and rushes to help, arriving just in time to witness Versago's final sacrifice.

“VERSAGO!”

Versago quickly protects Qinjuan from a powerful blow. Everything happened too fast before Qinjuan. Causing him to fall onto his knees and scream at the top of his lungs. Versago's death leaves Qinjuan devastated, but also grants him Versago's echo, enhancing his abilities.

Pushed to his limits, Qinjuan experienced a powerful emotional and physical surge as he uses Versago's echo to unleash a powerful attack, clearing the wave of Discords. “He’s fucking dead!” Qinjuan reports over to the other commanders. Oberon and Chilo who were fighting at a different area heard of it and didn’t know what to think as they looked at each other. The rest, devastated at the fall of another great leader. Meanwhile General Jiyan felt the loss of another close comrade of his. Alerted by Qinjuan's distress call, he rushes over to his side and prevents him from overclocking. Despite the battle's end, Qinjuan is left gravely injured, losing hearing in one ear and falling into a month-long coma.

During his coma, his adoptive family and comrades care for him. Although his adoptive family lived far away in a different region, they loved him dearly and came during this hard time. Despite never really meeting face-to-face after he left home to become a Midnight Ranger, they only ever kept in touch via calls. Upon waking, Qinjuan is wracked with guilt over Versago's death. Messenger soldiers present him with Versago's Chief of Staff badge, promoting him to the role. Overwhelmed, he breaks down, feeling the weight of his new responsibilities. Meanwhile, Oberon and Chilo overhear the promotion, further complicating their relationship with Qinjuan. General Jiyan on the other hand, was holding up the weight of those lost again, and trying to foresee Versago’s expectations.

“It should’ve been me that day. No one else.”

As he recovers from his injuries and grief, Qinjuan gradually accepts his new role. Drawing strength from Versago's teachings. Qinjuan's voice, once soft and often perceived as weak, now commands authority. He adopts Versago's assertiveness, using force when necessary to discipline and command respect. While he remains empathetic, he learns to balance kindness with firmness, incorporating Versago's sarcastic humor to bond with his troops.

The first time he met General Jiyan, he was utterly shocked. Unable to say anything. If this is really where life has brought him… “So be it…” The general was very kind to him and treated him like any other being. Qinjuan kept a formal and strong relationship with his general, just as he did with others around him. Be humble, be grateful, and it will be returned to you. He maintained a simple philosophy.

Throughout this transformation, General Jiyan becomes increasingly protective of Qinjuan, aware of his sacrificial tendencies and determined to prevent another tragedy like Versago's death. Versago, who had always been speaking to General Jiyan about several soldiers he always observed, had also spoken lots about Qinjuan. Including personal matters. This gave General Jiyan a lot of insight into what and who he’s dealing with.

So that’s just it about our aide, Qinjuan, right? Well, till now he still faces tons of struggles with being very selfless. He doesn’t really care much about himself but cares more about others as it can obviously be observed by those around him. Oh boohoo. He believed they were more important than his own life. Always pushing himself to the edge to aid others, do more than he can handle, why? “After all, if I died. I’ll just be buried with words of honor labeled on my grave. Other than bringing others grief, they move on eventually. I don’t leave anything impactful to be missed. I would rather others, like the troops of our office, be remembered for their cause than mine.” With that, Qinjuan believed his role will be replaced anytime death comes knocking on his door.

Despite his quiet suffering, he never sought recognition or praise, enduring harsh criticism and relentless demands in silence. His dreams and desires remained buried, overshadowed by his dedication to others, leaving him feeling invisible and unappreciated. Oh, so we’re pitying him now?

His journey so far has shown improvement. By having frequent help from a mental health professional, to taking many pieces of advice he once doubted, to trying new hobbies. Qinjuan found himself able to steady his life. The most important thing that he really loves doing is gardening and pursuing traditional art and culture. Despite not having anyone else to share the same interest with him. Other than that, he has grown independent enough for others to rely on him. “I know. People told me I should love myself more. They say you can’t love others if you can’t love yourself. To be fair, I would say that line is false. I have helped many… Wait, does that mean I agree I’ve made an impact on their lives? Ah, well. I acknowledge my flaws. Maybe one day, my ideals will change and I can learn to love myself. That’s my only goal as of now.”

With all that being said, Qinjuan's journey continues. He stands resilient, a testament to his growth and strength. As he leads the Midnight Rangers with unwavering dedication, he honors Versago's legacy and forges his own path, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.

Character Quest Plot:

Rover reunites with General Jiyan after a long absence, driven by pressing questions regarding the ongoing search for a dangerous Echo sought by the Huaxu Academy. During their conversation, Jiyan discloses that the investigation is already underway, handled by a trusted member of the Midnight Rangers—his right hand, Qinjuan. Jiyan expresses his confidence in Qinjuan's capabilities, mentioning that he and his troops have been away for months, engrossed in the mission without any recent contact. Sensing the urgency, Rover inquires where they might conduct their own investigation. Jiyan advises Rover to locate Qinjuan, the Chief of Staff, who is stationed in a village on the outskirts of Huanglong.

As the scene shifts, we are introduced to a mysterious figure, cloaked in a cyber fox mask, navigating the treacherous terrain of a village overrun by Tacet Discords. The air is thick with chaos, debris falling, and flames engulfing the surroundings. Amidst the turmoil, a child cries out for their mother, seconds away from being swallowed by the inferno. The masked figure swiftly intervenes, rescuing the child in a graceful and decisive motion. Surrounded by Tacet Discords, the figure clutches the child close, their sword flashing as they single-handedly fend off the monstrous horde.

Once the danger subsides, the figure reveals themselves to be Qinjuan. It is here that Rover and Qinjuan’s paths intersect. Qinjuan, ever vigilant, urges Rover to evacuate the area, citing the extreme danger. However, Rover explains their presence, driven by the rumor of a perilous Echo wreaking havoc, with a significant reward promised by the Huaxu Academy for its capture or for any valuable insights. Recognizing their shared objective, Qinjuan decides to ally with Rover. Together, they set off on a journey to uncover the truth, investigating the source of the chaos that threatens the land.

As they gathered information and followed leads, their journey was primarily one of meticulous investigation. However, the tension heightened when a chase ensued. Rover discovered a gigantic Tacet Discord (TD) roaming the city, prompting a pursuit. In a surprising turn, a girl named Chuntao intervened, preventing Rover from attacking the TD. Her desperate defense piqued Qinjuan’s curiosity, and something about her felt eerily familiar to him.

Qinjuan confronted Chuntao, asking if they had met before. She only responded that the TD was her family and she couldn’t bear to lose them. This revelation shocked both Qinjuan and Rover. As they conversed, the TD seized the opportunity to escape. Determined to capture it, Qinjuan pursued the TD, while Rover restrained Chuntao, promising they wouldn’t kill it but merely capture it for study. Although Qinjuan had different plans.

Outside the city, a massive battle ensues between Qinjuan and the TD. Rover arrives on the scene, and a tense standoff occurs as Rover defends the TD, urging caution and expressing concern for its connection to Chuntao. However, Qinjuan insists that the TD is too dangerous to be left alive, determined to put it down for good. Unable to find common ground, Rover vows to protect the TD, even if it means fighting Qinjuan.

Qinjuan accepts the challenge, and they engage in a fierce, three-phase battle. In the first phase, Qinjuan, still wearing his mask, attacks Rover with sharp precision, wielding both his pistol and ethereal sword. In the second phase, he only fights with an ethereal spear mimicking General Jiyan’s forte spear. His mask is half broken, revealing part of his face, giving Rover a glimpse of his appearance. In the final phase, a cutscene animation occurs as Qinjuan transforms into his Echo Form, a transformation that once belonged to Versago. Despite the intensity of the battle, Rover ultimately prevails. Qinjuan, now on the floor glitching due to instability, accepts his loss, allowing Rover to decide the next course of action.

In the end, Rover manages to subdue the TD, which then reverts to its human form.
The transformation revealed the TD to be a person, adding a layer of complexity to their mission. Qinjuan and Rover realized the gravity of this discovery and the necessity of keeping it confidential. Chuntao, unable to stay put, arrived and scolded them for harming her brother, Yuanzhou. Recognizing the name, Qinjuan questioned Chuntao further, but she was too angry to provide more information. Reluctantly, she allowed Rover to help transport the unconscious Yuanzhou back to her place. Along the way, Chuntao explained Yuanzhou's abnormality and her fear of him falling into the wrong hands. She refused to elaborate, leaving Rover to respect her silence.

After ensuring Yuanzhou and Chuntao were safe, Rover departed, offering final reassurances to Chuntao. Later, Rover and Qinjuan met at a scenic spot under the night sky. Qinjuan shared his feelings about the recent events and his inexplicable connection to Yuanzhou and Chuntao. Despite having more questions than answers, Qinjuan felt there was a deeper link between them. Rover, satisfied with the discovery and the potential for future revelations, reassured Qinjuan. They discussed Tacet Discords and other mysteries before parting ways, knowing their paths would cross again. The encounter left Qinjuan with a sense of purpose and a lingering curiosity about the true nature of his connection to Yuanzhou and Chuntao, setting the stage for further adventures and deeper understanding.

Book from The Quest: ( Obtained from Qinjuan’s Office )

Once upon a time, in a dark forest, lit only by the moon, there was a clever fox.

The fox was named Minrui. But Minrui was different from the other animals of the forest.

They didn't trust him because he liked to play tricks and be sneaky. Afraid he would cause trouble.

"Go away, Minrui!" the deer would say. "We don't want your tricks!" yelled the owl.

Minrui felt lonely and doubted his own skills. Misunderstood, nobody wanted to be his friend. Poor little Minrui hid away from the others, feeling as if he's better off by himself.

One cold night, a pack of hungry wolves came to the forest. The wolves wanted to eat the animals. The animals were very scared as the forest was in grave danger.

"Oh whatever shall we do?" cried the rabbits. "The wolves will eat us all!"

The animals thought about Minrui. Even though they didn't like his tricks, they knew he was very smart. Then, the animals cried out for help. "Minrui! Minrui!" They said, "We were wrong. Please help us!"

Minrui agreed to help. "Do not fret," he said, "I have a plan." With his clever thinking, he used the moonlight and shadows to trick the wolves.

He led them into a deep hole he had dug out and the wolves fell into it, trapping themselves. The forest was once safe again.

The animals were sorry for how they treated Minrui. "Oh cunning fox, we were wrong to chase you away. You saved us."* they said," Please stay with us."*

Minrui was happy to be accepted, alas. From that day on, not only was he just known as the trickster, but a hero. The animals respected and loved him.

"Thank you, Minrui. You're our hero!"

And so, the clever fox uses his tricks to protect his home. The animals learned that everyone has something special to offer, even those who seem different can be heroes.

And they all lived happily ever after.

The end.

Love Life

The Promotion and First Meeting

After Versago's death, Qinjuan was left with more than just physical wounds; the emotional toll weighed heavily on him. The hospital room felt like a prison, the white walls closing in, suffocating him with guilt. Versago had died protecting him, and now Qinjuan bore the responsibility of carrying on his legacy—a legacy he didn’t feel worthy of.

It was on one of these bleak days that General Jiyan walked into the room. Qinjuan had been absentmindedly holding a peach, a gift from a well-meaning visitor, though his bandaged hands and mouth made it impossible to eat. The fruit rolled from his grip as he looked up, startled to see the general himself standing there.

Qinjuan scrambled to get up, intending to bow, but Jiyan was quick to stop him. “There’s no need for formalities,” Jiyan said gently, his voice carrying a warmth that caught Qinjuan off guard. He bent down to pick up the peach, offering to get a fresh one, but Qinjuan shook his head, too overwhelmed to speak.

Jiyan had known much about him—Versago had made sure of that. Before his death, Versago had confided in Jiyan about Qinjuan, praising his potential but also warning of his sensitivity. Jiyan approached the conversation carefully, knowing the weight of grief Qinjuan was carrying. “We don’t need to rush anything,” Jiyan said, trying to ease the tension. “We can take our time, get to know each other. There’s no need to be formal.”

But it was awkward, at least at first. Qinjuan, still reeling from the loss, found it hard to adjust to this new reality. He was now the Chief of Staff, promoted in the wake of tragedy, and the burden felt too great to bear. Yet Jiyan persisted, visiting him daily, trying to forge a connection that went beyond their ranks.

The Struggle with Guilt

As days turned into weeks, Jiyan began to notice the cracks in Qinjuan’s demeanor. The stoic front he put on was a mask for the turmoil underneath. Survivor’s guilt gnawed at him, and Jiyan saw the signs—Qinjuan’s growing silence, the way he avoided talking about the future, the haunted look in his eyes.

Jiyan knew he couldn’t let Qinjuan slip away, not like this. He made it a point to stay by his side, talking to him, even if Qinjuan didn’t respond. He shared stories of his own losses, trying to show that he understood that he was there to help. But it was clear that Qinjuan was struggling, and each day, Jiyan feared he might lose him—not to another battle, but to his own despair.

The Breaking Point

After his discharge, Qinjuan threw himself back into work, but he kept his distance from Jiyan. He was cold, formal, and refused to engage in any casual conversation. The walls he had built around himself were higher than ever, and Jiyan, despite his best efforts, couldn’t break through. It was frustrating, but more than that, it was heartbreaking. Jiyan could see the pain Qinjuan was in, yet he was powerless to help.

To make matters worse, Chilo and Oberon, who had never been kind to Qinjuan, intensified their bullying. They undermined his authority, mocked him behind his back, and made his already difficult life unbearable. Qinjuan’s resilience, already worn thin, finally snapped. One day, he disappeared, leaving behind a note for Jiyan.

The note was a farewell, laced with sorrow. Qinjuan wrote that he wasn’t fit to be Chief of Staff, that Jiyan should find someone better—someone who wouldn’t fail like he had. He thanked Jiyan for his kindness, for being one of the few who cared, but said that it was time to say goodbye.

The Turning Point

Jiyan's heart raced as he approached Qinjuan's apartment. The note had left him desperate to find him, fearing the worst. He had searched everywhere before finally deciding to check the one place Qinjuan might retreat to in such a state—his home.

As Jiyan quietly opened the door, the sight before him shattered his heart. Qinjuan was on the floor, his back against the wall, trembling uncontrollably, tears streaming down his face. He was in the throes of a panic attack, gasping for breath, his hands gripping his hair as if trying to hold himself together. The strong, stoic Chief of Staff was reduced to a man drowning in his own despair, unable to escape the crushing weight of guilt and sorrow.

Jiyan didn’t hesitate. He rushed to Qinjuan's side, kneeling beside him and gently taking his hands in his own. “Qinjuan,” he whispered, his voice soft but firm, “I’m here. Breathe with me.” He guided Qinjuan through slow, steady breaths, anchoring him in the present, grounding him as the panic slowly subsided.

When the storm of emotions finally began to calm, Qinjuan slumped against Jiyan, exhausted and broken. “I can’t do this,” he whispered, his voice filled with anguish. “I’m not strong enough...”

Jiyan pulled him closer, wrapping his arms around him in a protective embrace. “You don’t have to be anything other than yourself,” he said, his voice filled with a quiet strength. “I’m not asking you to be perfect, Qinjuan. I just want you here, with me. We’ll figure the rest out together.”

At that moment, something in Qinjuan shifted. He realized that Jiyan wasn’t just offering support—he was offering to share the burden. For the first time, Qinjuan allowed himself to lean on someone else, to trust that he didn’t have to carry the weight alone.

The Bond Strengthens

In the weeks that followed, Jiyan and Qinjuan’s relationship deepened. Jiyan continued to see Qinjuan, but now, the walls between them began to crumble. They talked about everything—about life, about their fears, about the future. Jiyan was patient, never pushing too hard, always letting Qinjuan set the pace.

But with every conversation, every shared moment, their bond grew stronger. Jiyan’s unwavering presence became a lifeline for Qinjuan, helping him navigate through his grief and embrace his new role as Chief of Staff. In turn, Qinjuan’s quiet strength and resilience inspired Jiyan, reminding him why he had chosen this path in the first place.

Yet, beneath the surface, something more began to stir. The casual touches, the lingering glances, the way their conversations would sometimes drift into personal territory—it all pointed to a growing attraction that neither could ignore.

The Fear of Love

Despite their growing closeness, both Jiyan and Qinjuan were acutely aware of the risks that came with their positions. The fear of losing each other in battle loomed large, casting a shadow over their budding relationship. They were also mindful of the scrutiny that would come from society—the whispers about two men, a general and his chief of staff, becoming romantically involved. It was a risk they weren’t sure they could afford to take.

Qinjuan, in particular, struggled with the idea of being with Jiyan. Even after all they had been through, he couldn’t shake the feeling that Jiyan deserved better—someone stronger, someone without the scars he bore. He pulled back, trying to maintain a distance, convinced that it was for the best.

But Jiyan wouldn’t have it. One evening, after a particularly grueling day, he cornered Qinjuan in his quarters, determined to lay everything on the table. “I don’t care about what society thinks, or what anyone else says,” Jiyan declared, his voice steady but filled with emotion. “I don’t care about the risks, or the fact that we’re both men in positions of power. None of that matters to me. What matters is you.”

Qinjuan looked at him, torn between fear and longing. “But... I’m not enough for you,” he whispered, his voice barely audible. “You deserve someone better, someone who isn’t so broken.” ( Wow drama, you are still reading? )

Jiyan stepped closer, cupping Qinjuan’s face in his hands. “You’re everything I want,” he said softly, but with conviction. “You’re strong, you’re brave, and you’re the only one I trust to stand by my side. I don’t want anyone else, Qinjuan. I want you. Just as you are.”

For a moment, they just stood there, the weight of Jiyan’s words hanging between them. Then, slowly, Qinjuan nodded, a small but significant gesture of acceptance. They kissed for the first time, a tentative but deeply emotional moment that sealed the bond they had been building for so long.

The Balance of Roles

From that point on, Jiyan and Qinjuan’s relationship took on a new dimension. In public, they remained the formidable General and his Chief of Staff, commanding respect and maintaining the strict decorum required of their positions. But in private, they allowed themselves to be vulnerable.

They became adept at balancing their dual lives. Behind closed doors, they were affectionate and playful, finding joy in the simple moments they shared. But when duty called, they snapped back into their roles, putting their relationship aside to focus on their responsibilities.

There were times when the line between their public and private lives blurred—moments when they couldn’t resist stealing a kiss or sharing a quiet touch, even when they knew they shouldn’t. On more than one occasion, they were nearly caught by the guards, forcing them to quickly compose themselves and pretend nothing had happened. It became a game of sorts, a way to keep their relationship alive in the midst of their demanding roles.

Despite the risks, their bond only grew stronger with time. They became each other’s anchor, the one constant in a world filled with uncertainty and danger. And though the fear of loss never truly went away, they learned to live with it, choosing to cherish the time they had together rather than worrying about what might come.

In the end, Jiyan and Qinjuan’s love bloomed. Their relationship, though hidden from most, was a proven belief that even in the darkest times, love could still find a way to thrive.

Lines:

Self Introduction: Greetings, I am the Chief of Staff in the Midnight Rangers. You can refer to me as Qinjuan. Should you require my assistance, I will do my utmost to help you, as long as it… isn’t on the battlefield.
Chat I: Back then, people often mistook me for an outsider because of my old attire. I didn't design it myself; my mother was an outfit designer and engineer. She crafted outfits for various departments, and while her work wasn't universally needed, a few still wear or use the pieces she made. I cherish her efforts, especially her artistic choice to include traditional elements. They are truly beautiful.
Chat II: Every time I see a new recruit, I’m reminded of my own beginnings. The fear, the uncertainty. I try to be someone they can look up to, someone they can rely on. Maybe it helps me feel like I have a purpose beyond just following orders.
Thoughts I: Have you ever tried Dou Shou Qi? Wait, what? You’re missing out? How about other traditional games? ... Well, that’s not a problem. If it interests you, would you like to try them out? I have board games at home that we can play together. Only if you want to, of course.
Thoughts II: Do you ever think if Tacet Discords can be nice? I once encountered an unusual one. It seemed… kind in some way, or perhaps just scared and confused. It didn't attack me at all. I wish to learn more about them and read any ongoing research. It's best to understand what we’re all dealing with anyways.
Thoughts III: When tackling a big task or multiple ones, it's best to divide your work into smaller, manageable parts. What’s that? Oh, I didn't realize. It's nice to have the freedom to do whatever you wish, even if you're caught up with certain things. I suppose you have it easy, no? Not that I'm implying you haven't faced difficulties! I just mean you're not tied to a role that demands a daily routine...
Thoughts IV: Sometimes, I wonder about your worries and concerns. If there's anything on your mind, feel free to share. I'm here to listen, no judgment. Everyone needs someone to lean on now and then.
Thoughts V: During quiet evenings, I often find solace in tending to a small garden I’ve started. The simple act of caring for plants brings a sense of tranquility and purpose. It’s a small way to create beauty and calm amidst the chaos.

Greeting: How can I assist you today? Just make sure it isn’t related to fighting and we’re good.
Join Team I: I'll do my best to support the team.
Join Team II: Let’s work together and achieve our goals.
Join Team III: Ready to contribute in any way I can.
Idle I: Just going over some strategies… Oh, did you need something?
Idle II: It’s quiet… almost too quiet.
Idle III: Maybe I should practice my calligraphy during this downtime. Sigh There’s always so much to think about.
Hobbies: Traditional culture should be more appreciated these days. As time advances, we seem to slowly forget about it. I still struggle to find people with similar interests. It’s quite sad, honestly. It would be nice to write some calligraphy with somebody.
Troubles: I always wake up in the strangest positions, often at my office desk. Don’t ask, but I barely get any sleep due to the sheer volume of work assigned to me. Sigh I’m trying my best
Ideals: I believe in the power of continuous growth and learning. Each day offers us opportunities to become better versions of ourselves. Whether it's mastering a new skill or simply finding joy in the little things, I strive to embrace these moments of growth with an open heart. What do you find most inspiring in your journey of self-improvement?
Favorite Food: Hmm, if I had to choose a favorite, it would definitely be fried tofu. The crispy outside and the soft inside, especially when it's perfectly seasoned, makes it so irresistible. I can't stop ordering it, and it’s hard to resist. I guess that's why I'm always low on money... Please resist cravings when it comes to food; it’s a trap to empty your wallet.
Disliked Food: I’m not a picky eater, but all food tastes better when the ingredients are organic. I’m not a fan of processed or genetically modified food. Sadly, it is hard to get organic food nowadays. Plus, everything we eat contains some sort of inorganic source. As long as it is healthy and tasty, all is balanced. What do you think?

About Jiyan: He’s always under so much pressure and rarely gets proper rest. I truly wish I could ease some of the weight he bears. The idea of being his assistant was initially a jest thrown around by the Midnight Rangers; some took it seriously, which was amusing at first. Instead of selecting someone more seasoned, they settled on me. I often wonder what they saw in me. Nevertheless, as Chief, I am determined to support Jiyan in any way I can, to help him carry the burdens that come with his position.
About Mortefi: This weapon was made by the respectable Sir Mortefi. He was kind enough to craft such a beautiful instrument of destruction for me. The thing is, someone reported me to him saying I’ve been “swinging a stick in battle.” Like, what does that even mean? I never owned a proper weapon, just a basic sword I received from my parents. Yet that thing broke like a stick. Oh well, at least Sir Mortefi used his intelligence to craft such a strong weapon, especially by himself without help. In fact, he didn’t even ask for payment. How kind of him.
About Calcharo: I met that man once while researching an area with the barrier management team. At some point, we came across a dangerous detection in our system. When we approached the danger, it happened to be a long white-haired man tearing a field of Tacet Discords to shreds in the most aggressive manner. We ended up leaving in fear when he stared at us after his furious battle.
About Sanhua: Miss Sanhua is a formidable fighter. Her skills in strategizing and execution are truly amazing. She excels at what she does. Though she has a tough persona, she’s also a kind and pure soul. I got some special fighting advice from her so I try to implement them as much as I can into my own style.
About Yinlin: She terrifies me. She needs to stay away. I do not care how many yards away, as long as she doesn’t lay a single finger on me. I do not have good interactions with her. At all.
About Jinshi: Her magistrate has my utmost respect. Although she treats me… well, how do I put this? She doesn’t seem to see me as a formal person. Rather, in her own words, as a child. I don’t understand what she sees in me. Despite that, I find that some of the best advice I receive often comes from her whenever I have the chance to speak with her.
About Changli: I’m glad I have some people to play traditional games with, but the one who stands out the most is Miss Changli. Her thinking skills are beyond comparison. I always find myself constantly losing battles against her. If you ever manage to win a game against her, you'd likely be better than me at that game. She's truly a formidable opponent.
About Lingyang: Lingyang is an extraordinarily talented individual. His graceful dancing is nothing short of a mesmerizing spectacle. Watching him perform is a true celebration of the arts. You should catch one of his performances whenever you can; I promise you, it will be an unforgettable experience.
About Huolong: He's not just a talented performer but also excels in lion dancing. Our conversation was brief, as he was rushing off to a performance, but there was something about him that felt oddly familiar. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's like he's someone I should know. Once, during a lineup session before battle, Huolong tripped over something, and I had to stifle a laugh. Moments like that make him stand out even more.
About Xiulan: Who? Oh, that…girl. Umm. She seems nice? Just not the kind of person to have a conversation over tea. Although I have not spoken to her directly, I’ve heard several things about her. Not to start gossip or anything, but due to her relations with several events we do not speak of, it’s best to be cautious around her.
About Rosteph: That guy... I can’t stand him. He’s always stirring up trouble and seems to have sinned enough to fall from any scrap of respectability. He’s the type who doesn’t belong in decent society, always on the wrong side of things and never learning from his mistakes.
About Jianhao: Jianhao's work ethic and intelligence are nothing short of extraordinary. She consistently produces exceptional results with remarkable efficiency. I deeply admire her ability to handle even the most challenging tasks effortlessly. However, I can't help but wonder if my expectations sometimes place too much pressure on her. Her dedication deserves recognition, yet I hope she knows I value her well-being above all else.
About Fenghua: Ah, you speak of someone with a real sense of responsibility. At least we have Fenghua to keep things in check around the Midnight Rangers, even though she's under Chilo. She doesn’t let a single mistake pass her by, maintaining a level of discipline and order that’s truly commendable. Given her unwavering commitment and meticulous nature, I firmly believe she deserves a place in the higher positions—unlike Chilo, who could learn a thing or two from her.
About Oberon: Oberon... His relationship with Chilo drives me mad. They’re such a bully, yet I can't deny that Oberon is actually a decent person and leader on his own. It's like Chilo is leeching off him, dragging him into bad behavior.
About Chilo: I can't stand Chilo. Every interaction with him is a test of patience. Trust me, you'd do well to steer clear of him.
About Versago: I miss him. Talking about him... it's hard.
About Chuntao: There's something so familiar about Chuntao, but she wants nothing to do with me. I can't shake the feeling that I need to know more about her.
About Yuanzhou: I've been thinking a lot about Yuanzhou since our last encounter. I wonder how he's holding up, staying undercover like that. Please, keep an eye on him for me and let me know if anything changes.

Birthday Wishes: The past is what influences the present. Refine it, and it defines you now. Happy birthday! Here are some carefully crafted trinkets I made recently based on my perception of you. I would also like to mention I got us a personal lion dancing show just for you. For luck of course. mumbling Though, you can’t seem to remember your past, you remember your birthday.
Ascension I: Does this mean I'm actually useful? Well, I do not oppose your decisions, but…
Ascension II: I see, I hope this can upgrade my ability to assist you further.
Ascension III: I may be the assistant of someone very important, but I have decided to personally become an assistant of yours. What? Well, in a friendly way, of course.
Ascension IV: I feel like we’ve gotten closer. Following your journey has taught me a lot of things to improve in different areas, especially in strategizing on the field. Would you say I’m doing alright?
Ascension V: I don’t understand why you brought me here with you this far, but from the bottom of my heart… Thank you. Let me know if you need anything, alright? It can be anything.

Lines from Other Characters About Qinjuan:

Jiyan: Qinjuan... he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, always striving to do more than what's asked of him. I've seen him push himself to the brink, sacrificing his own well-being for the sake of others. There was this one time in battle... he fought with such ferocity, such determination, that he ended up gravely injured. I thought we had lost him... but he slipped into a coma that lasted for what felt like an eternity. We feared the worst. Now, whenever he's on the field, I can't help but worry. Please, watch over him. He may not ask for help, but he needs it more than anyone realizes.
Jinshi: Qinjuan may appear unassuming, but beneath that quiet exterior lies a heart of unwavering loyalty and determination. I've seen him face challenges with courage and resilience, never faltering in his duty. He may doubt himself at times, but I have no doubt in his capabilities.
Changli: That boy is quite endearing, isn't he? His little fox tail and ears are such charming aspects, though it's a shame he doesn't appreciate them as much as he should. Despite his self-doubt, he's the perfect fit for the Chief of Staff role in the Midnight Rangers, just like his general. He's capable and reliable, even if he doesn't always see it himself.
Sanhua: He is an enigma wrapped in a mystery. He keeps to himself, rarely revealing his thoughts or feelings. But there's a strength within him that cannot be ignored. He's proven himself to be a valuable asset to the Midnight Rangers, even if he doesn't realize it himself. I just hope he learns to trust in his own abilities more.
Xiulan: His animalistic features are adorable! Also he’s definitely having a secret affair with his general… I didn’t say anything, what do you mean?
Huolong: That guy? Oh yeah, I always spot him in the crowd at my lion dances, cheering us on. It’s like he’s got a VIP pass or something—always there, every single time. Never missing a single show. Funny thing is, I can't remember if we've ever really talked. Maybe we did, maybe we didn't. We’ve performed for the Midnight Rangers a few times and saw him around then, too. Makes me think he’s more than just an ordinary supporter.
Mortefi: Ah, him. The bearer of my troubled craftsmanship, it's not often I encounter someone so adept at pushing the limits of my designs. You see, that weapon of his—it's not merely a creation, but an ongoing experiment in durability. I've lost count of the number of times it's required my attention. Yet, amidst all the setbacks, there's an undeniable satisfaction in refining my work to match his resilience.
Rosteph: Just from my first time meeting him, I can already tell he’s going to be a problem. What’s my luck meeting so many Rangers and patrollers lately?
Jianhao: Ah, he's an interesting fellow. He seems so sweet yet he is not afraid to take control when he needs to. I wish I could talk to him more...it would be nice to get to know him better...what a fascinating leader.
Oberon: Don't get me wrong, but I honestly don't think he's fit to be a leader. I can't fathom why anyone thought he should be Chief of Staff. It's a real shame we lost a genuinely good leader because of him. I'm concerned about the direction he might steer the Midnight Rangers towards with his ideals.
Chilo: Who? ...Oh, that bastard. Why waste time talking about him when the conversation should be about me?~
